The Commercial Performance Threshold: When Better Is No Longer Worth More

The commercially relevant question is not how far Deep Tech performance can be pushed, but how much performance a customerʼs decision actually requires.
7D-ICA™'s Stimulus:
“Not every increase in technical accuracy or performance has equal commercial value.”
The Evidence: "When Better Is No Longer Worth More"
Deep Tech teams are trained to optimize technical performance. Customers, however, value performance through the decisions, outcomes, risks, and workflows it changes. A technical improvement matters commercially when it changes an economically meaningful result—not merely when a specification improves.
The conventional assumption runs: higher performance leads to better products, greater customer value, higher willingness to pay, and stronger adoption. That chain can fail where an improvement no longer changes the customerʼs decision, raises cost or complexity, or requires capabilities the buyer cannot monetize. Conjoint research explicitly accommodates diminishing marginal utility: the same incremental performance gain may generate different amounts of utility depending on where it occurs. [1]
7D-ICA™ proposed commercial performance threshold is use-case-specific: the minimum performance at which a technology reliably produces an economically meaningful customer outcome sufficient to justify adoption. Beyond that threshold, additional performance may still matter—especially where errors are catastrophic—but its incremental commercial value must be tested, not assumed.
The next R&D dollar may create more value by improving speed, cost, reliability, usability, or integration than by extending a specification customers no longer need.
Technical excellence creates commercial value only when it changes an economically meaningful outcome.
